Chapter Forty-Four

Journal Entry #4

I saw her again. She was just as beautiful as the last time I laid eyes on her. Her blonde hair hung to just above her shoulders, and her lips were as moist as a freshly picked strawberry. I’d been telling myself that, if I ever saw her again, I’d say more than the cheesy, “Hi.” That I’d let her know how interested I am in her. Even if she isn’t into men. That doesn’t matter, because I know she’s into me. I mean, the way she smiles whenever she sees me is more than just a friendly smile. We have a connection; something about me she likes. There’s something about her that I like, too.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m feeling myself a little too much. I know she wants me, and I want her to know that I know she wants me. Maybe it was the holiday spirit. Christmas had just passed, and I was ready for a new year and a new beginning. I wanted my new beginning to be with her.

When I saw her again, she didn’t see me. The liquor store was more crowded than usual. People were getting ready for the New Year’s celebration, and what a way to bring in the New Year than to be too pissy drunk to remember it. I excused myself past two people and, just as I was ready to tap her shoulder, her girlfriend came up beside her and wrapped her arm around her waist. Damn. I quickly pulled back my hand, surprised by the girlfriend’s sudden presence. Where did she come from? Before I had a chance to walk away, I accidently cleared my throat, which prompted the two women to turn around.

When she saw me, she smiled the same way she had in the past. My heart fluttered, and I was momentarily at a loss of words.

“Oh, hi,” Madelyn said.

“Hi,” I replied shyly.

“You getting liquored up for the New Year too?”

“Aren’t we all?”

She laughed, and the two women glanced at each other.

“Sorry, this is Justine.”

Justine stuck out her hand and we briefly shook.

“Nice to meet you,” Justine said.

“Same,” I replied.

“So, what are you buying?”

“Oh, not sure. Just browsing for now.”

“Yeah, we aren’t sure either.” The two looked at each other again.

“We should probably just grab a couple of bottles and see how they are,” Justine said.

“My sentiments exactly,” Madelyn replied. She looked around the room, scanning the various bottles of wine. “If you aren’t doing anything, you’re welcome to taste test with us.”

I smiled, thinking about what I had to do that day. Nothing was more important than this.

“I’d love to.”
